Most of us have an inner critic that delivers negative self talk. The sources of the messages and the tone with which they are delivered are important to discover and understand, as they are replays of past recordings, meaning that they continue to have power over us only as long as we believe them. When we were young, vulnerable, and lacked self awareness, we took on or made up beliefs that reflected others' judgments and feelings about us or that cast blame on ourselves. As adults we now have the power to challenge and contradict them, to rewrite our childhood stories and support others to do the same.
And yet adopting self criticism may also have served another purpose, one of generating sufficient discomfort or anger to motivate taking action of some form. Sense into your inner critic with the intention of discovering when and how it may have developed to serve you in some way. Feel the emotional burden it has been carrying for so many years.
